<p>After all, that’s what everyone will be checking out as soon as it’s on your finger! The traditional stone of choice for engagement rings is the diamond. The delightful custom of proposing marriage with a diamond engagement ring dates back over 500 years. Because of its rarity and clarity, the diamond is considered the ultimate symbol of love, commitment and fidelity. But all diamonds are not created equally. We’ll explain why.</p>
<h2><strong>Ever heard of the 4 Cs?</strong></h2>
<p>If you’ve been dating for any length of time, or have friends that have gotten hitched, there’s a good chance you’ll already have heard about the 4 Cs. It’s what we name the industry standard for grading diamonds. The 4 Cs stand for colour, carat, cut and clarity. Here’s a quick summary of each of these 4 Cs. Once you understand what each stands for, you can then decide which of the 4 Cs is most important to you.</p>
<h2><strong>Colour</strong></h2>
<p>Diamonds are graded from the letter ‘D’ (which is colourless) to ‘Z’ (which is light yellow or brown). A ‘D’ grade diamond is considered the highest grade because it’s rarer. Which means it’s usually priced higher. There are also “fancy” diamonds which is the name given to coloured diamonds. </p>

<h2><strong>Carat</strong></h2>
<p>Carat refers to the weight of the diamond. Diamonds are usually measured in ‘points’ or ‘carats’. There are 100 points in a carat. Therefore 50 points is known as half a carat. The most popular carat weight for engagement rings are 0.5ct, 0.75, 1ct and 1.5ct.</p>

<h2><strong>Cut</strong></h2>
<p>Most jewellers agree that the cut is the most important of the 4 C’s. The cut can have a significant influence on the diamond’s value. It showcases how well the diamond was crafted from its original state. Each stone is cut to highlight the diamond's proportions and symmetry, allowing a perfect surface polish in order to achieve the maximum brilliance. Most of us already instinctively know that the more it sparkles, the better! </p>

<h2><strong>Clarity</strong></h2>
<p>The clarity of a diamond refers to the number of surface blemishes or internal flaws, known as inclusions, that exist in the diamond. Inclusions are naturally occurring ‘imperfections’ that make each diamond unique. Clarity ranges from ‘Flawless’ to ‘Heavily Included’. As only 1% of the world’s diamonds are flawless, most diamonds have some grade of inclusion. The most desirable, grades include the Slightly Included (SI) and Very Slightly Included (VS) diamonds, these inclusions will be visible to a jeweller through a magnification tool. Diamonds graded Si1 and Si2 are most affordable, they have some inclusions but it is unlikely you will see them with a naked eye.</p>

<p>Each of these 4 Cs are important when it comes to choosing a diamond, but it really comes down to personal taste. The price of the diamond depends on each of the 4 Cs, and not just the weight or size of the diamond.</p>

<p>Although the saying goes that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, sometimes a bride-to-be wants a little more colour in her life. <p>Here’s the good news, your diamond isn’t really getting dull. It’s simply getting dirty. Soap, hand lotion, hairspray and sunscreen will all build up on your diamond leaving it a little grimy. <p>We hear terrifying stories of people using abrasive cleaning products or bleach, acetone or even toothpaste to clean their rings. All of these harsh cleaning products risk scratching the ring, leaving it vulnerable to further damage. We’ve even heard about someone heating their engagement ring in a pot of boiling water to clean it and we want you to promise us that you’ll never, ever do that! Promise? Good, now that we’ve got that sorted, let’s start looking at what you can do to keep those diamonds sparkly!</p>
<h2><strong>First things first</strong></h2>
<p>Before we tackle cleaning your diamond ring. Let’s have a quick chat about some regular maintenance you ought to be thinking of when it comes to caring for your ring. The simplest way to care for your diamond ring is to be aware of when and where you’re wearing it. Although diamonds are certainly very durable, there are some situations that are best avoided when you’re wearing your ring. For example, if you regularly apply hand lotion before you go to sleep at night, it’s a good idea to remove your ring first and place it in a little dish on your bedside table. Then wait until the lotion is absorbed before you pop your ring back on. <p>Now that you’ve gathered everything you need to clean your diamond ring at home, find a good place to start cleaning your ring. If you want to do this standing beside the sink, please first make sure that there’s a plug in the sink or a strainer that will stop your precious ring from getting washed away should you drop it. We do not want you to have to Google “how to rescue my engagement ring from the drain”.</p>
<p>Next warm the water until it’s hot to the touch, but nowhere near boiling. Place the hot water in the bowl and add a couple of drops of dishwashing liquid and stir so that it mixes with the water. You don’t need much, just enough for a few bubbles! Now gently place your diamond ring in the bowl and let it sit for about 15 to 20 minutes. This will help to gently loosen any dirt and grime that’s built up on your ring.</p>
<h3><strong>Why do I need a toothbrush to clean my diamond ring?</strong></h3>
<p>Here’s the fun bit. Soaking your ring will help to loosen the dirt, but if you have any nooks and crannies in your ring, then a soft-bristled toothbrush is the perfect tool to help shift away any stubborn particles. Just gently scrub the toothbrush back and forth over the ring, including the under-side of the diamond and watch as those sparkles start coming back!</p>
<p>Once it’s all lovely and clean, rinse the ring with lukewarm water and place it on the paper towel to air-dry. As ultrasonic cleaners work by sending vibrations through the water, they can loosen settings and result in the diamonds falling out. If not immediately, then later down the track. And there are few things worse than looking down at your diamond ring one day only to realise you’ve lost a stone. At Hoskings we’ll check the integrity of the ring with each professional clean in order to try and prevent this from happening, but we urge you to avoid ultrasonic cleaners in between times, just in case!</p>

<p>It’s an age-old question that’s bothered men and women for thousands of years. Yes, thousands! As far back as we can trace, from the earliest finding of jewellery approximately 25,000 years ago, humans have always adorned their bodies with precious metals, gemstones and more.  Sure, the oldest known piece of jewellery, found in a cave in Monaco, was just a simple necklace made of fish bones! But over the centuries our refinement of metals and precious stones means that our jewellery has come a long way. Thank goodness!</p>
<p>However, choosing what colour jewellery and in particular what colour metal to wear, is still something that baffles many people now. In this blog we’ll tell you what makes gold different from silver. We’ll explain the difference between yellow, white and rose gold. And, we’ll share some tips to help you choose which metal is best for you. But first, a brief history lesson, so you can learn a little more about how gold and silver jewellery has been worn throughout the ages! </p>

<p>It’s believed that jewellery was first worn as a talisman or protection from danger. Early hunters believed that jewellery would bring them success in their hunt and people wore <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/collections/chains-necklaces">necklaces</a>, <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/collections/bracelets">bracelets</a>, <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/collections/rings">rings</a> and more to protect against bad luck and illness. Over the centuries, jewellery became symbolic tools that indicated wealth, <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/collections/lockets">religious devotion</a> and love.</p>
<p>The Royal Tombs in ancient Sumer in Iran, built around 3,000 – 4,000 BC, were embellished with many significant pieces of gold jewellery such as headdresses, crowns, <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/collections/pendants-1">pendants</a>, <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/collections/chains">chains</a>, <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/collections/earrings">earrings</a> and <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/collections/rings">rings.</a> A couple of thousand years later in ancient Egypt, the royal jewellers used gold adorned with gemstones like <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/search?q=turquoise">turquoise</a> and <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/search?q=amethyst">amethyst</a>. Tutankhamun’s tomb alone contained approximately 9,000 kilograms worth of gold!</p>
<p>Moving forward hundreds of years later, gold had become a precious commodity in ancient Rome. Only senators were allowed the privilege to wear <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/collections/rings-1">gold rings</a>. Roman citizens wore <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/collections/rings-silver">silver rings</a> and slaves were only permitted to wear iron. It was really during the Georgian and Victorian eras that people began to wear the type of jewellery that’s still worn today. The goldsmiths of that time figured out that mixing pure gold with other metals would make a more durable and less expensive piece of jewellery and so, gold became more accessible to all.</p>
<h2>History of silver jewellery</h2>
<p>Our silver story starts around the end of 4,000 BC in Anatolia where the ancient Turks discovered how to extract silver from lead ore in a process called cupellation. Silver became greatly admired for its strength and colour and became almost as popular as gold. In fact, 400 years after Tutankhamun’s reign, King Sheshonq II was buried in an all-silver sarcophagus.</p>
<p>The ancient Greeks and Romans used silver for coins and wore it for jewellery such as <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/collections/rings-silver">rings</a>, <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/collections/anklets">anklets</a> and <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/collections/bangles">armlets</a>. In 800AD the Vikings were responsible for much of the transport of silver to Europe where silversmiths refined their craft by making stunning <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/search?q=silver+jewellery">silver jewellery</a>. </p>

<h2>What exactly is gold?</h2>
<p>Gold is a precious durable metal that can be quite easily melted down and re-forged, making it a valuable resource. The purity of gold is measured in carats. The purest form of gold is 24ct and is quite soft which means it can be moulded, but also scratched quite easily. Blending gold with other metals reduces the number of carats and makes the gold far more durable.  It can also be blended to create different colours. The result of these blended metals is called an alloy.</p>
<p><a href="https://hoskings.com.au/search?q=gold+jewellery">Gold jewellery</a> is mainly made in a range of 8ct to 24ct, but it’s most common to find it in the 9ct and 18ct.  Although it’s useful to understand how the carat of gold is measured, it’s really not terribly critical when buying jewellery. Choosing the colour that you prefer is more important.</p>

It’s been revered as the classic choice for fine jewellery for centuries and has been synonymous with <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/collections/engagement-rings">engagement rings</a> and <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/search?q=wedding+rings">wedding rings</a> for many years.</p>
<p><a href="https://hoskings.com.au/search?q=white+gold">White gold</a> is an alloy of gold and a white metal such as palladium, zinc, nickel or manganese which provides additional strength and also alters the colour. Just like <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/search?q=yellow+gold">yellow gold</a>, <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/search?q=white+gold">white gold’s</a> purity is measured in carats. This beautifully romantic gold is actually the strongest of the three types of gold, because copper is very robust, and the resulting alloy is very durable. It’s worth noting however that copper can cause allergic reactions in some individuals, so it’s a good idea to have a trial if you have sensitive skin. </p>
<h3>How is silver different to gold?</h3>
<p>While <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/search?q=silver">silver</a> is also easy to shape and work into beautiful designs, it’s naturally harder than <a href="http://www.langantiques.com/university/gold-2/">gold</a>. It’s also considered a “noble metal” because it resists corrosion and it is very durable. It’s usually blended with another <a href="https://www.langantiques.com/university/metals-non-noble">metal</a> to harden it and protect it from scratching. <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/search?q=silver">Silver</a> is universally loved by jewellers because it’s one of the most versatile metals for jewellery making.</p>
<p>Unlike gold, silver is not measured in carats. Instead it’s graded or rated using a numerical system. Pure silver is rated 999. <p>Everyone will remember that time when their friends started talking about getting their ears pierced. Negotiations started and suddenly, all the Mums in the area were bombarded with incessant pleading and begging. Granny’s old clip-ons were polished off and worn till our ears turned purple and diamante stickers were no longer used for crafting but found a new position on ear lobes instead!</p>
<p>And then, one by one, our friends would walk into the classroom on Monday morning with sparkly new earrings and a new air of sophistication! <br>If you’re like many of us at Hoskings Jewellers, we’re wondering how we suddenly became old enough that our kids have also started nagging us to get their ears pierced!</p>
<p>And so, it’s our turn to hear the pleads of “Mum, can I get my ears pierced pleeeeassseee?” So, as with any decision when it comes to our kids, we needed to check out the do’s and ‘don’ts of ear-piercing for kids. <br>That’s why we’ve researched when the best time is to get our children’s ears pierced. Where to take them to get their ears pierced safely? <h2><strong>When is the best time to have your child’s ears pierced?</strong></h2>
<p>In some cultures, families will pierce a child’s ears when they’re a baby. In Brazil, for example, a baby girl will usually have her ears pierced in the hospital only days after birth. In Australia however, it’s more common for parents to wait to get their child’s ears pierced with child-safe earrings when they’re school aged. Some will go earlier and some wait even longer until a child is able to care for the piercing themselves, usually when they’re a pre-teen or teenager. <br>Once you’ve read some of the do’s and don’ts of getting your child’s ear’s pierced, you can make a decision on when is the best time to get your child’s ears pierced.</p>
<h2><strong>What to consider before getting your child’s ears pierced</strong></h2>
<p>Maintaining good hygiene is very important in the first 6 weeks after a piercing. If your child is too young to understand that they can’t touch their ears, then it might be better to wait until they know not to touch! <br>If your child is older, then it’s worthwhile considering whether their activities require them to remove their earrings in that first couple of months. For example, if your son or daughter plays netball, it’s best to wait until off-season to get their ears pierced.</p>
<h2><strong>How to know if your child is ready to have their ears pierced?</strong></h2>
<p>If your child has already started asking to have their ears pierced, then it’s a good idea to ask them how much they really know about piercing. It’s important that they know they’ll experience some temporary discomfort during and for a little while after the piercing. You also need to make sure they understand how important it is to take good care of their newly pierced ears. <br>We think it’s worth setting some ground rules about how they can help care for them. If you think they’ll struggle to look after them without a lot of assistance, then it might be best to wait.</p>

<h2><strong>Does ear piercing hurt children?</strong></h2>
<p>Children usually tolerate ear piercing very well. Most kids describe it as a feeling of ‘pinching’ or a little ‘sting’. Some piercing professionals will put some local anaesthetic cream on the area before they do the piercing to minimise the discomfort, but most children don’t need that as the piercing is over so quickly. After the initial sting they can experience some heat and some throbbing but even that doesn’t usually last very long. <br>It’s a good idea to bring something with you to the piercing appointment to distract your child during the piercing, or to give them immediately afterwards. Perhaps their favourite toy, a lolly, or even a promise to take them for a little treat afterwards.</p>
<h2><strong>Where is the best place to have your child’s ears pierced?</strong></h2>
<p>It’s essential that to know that your child is in safe hands when you take them for their ear piercing. That’s why we urge all parents to do their research before getting their child’s ears pierced. Ask your friends where they got their piercings done and if they had a good experience. Or you can look up the local salons that offer ear piercing and check out their reviews online. <br>If you think your child would prefer to have both ears pierced simultaneously, you can call the salon in advance and ask if they offer a ‘double operator’ service. This is sometimes easier, especially if your child is nervous about experiencing discomfort. <br>Then when you arrive at the salon, it’s important that you feel comfortable enough to ask questions. Make sure that the equipment they use is clean and sterile and the person doing the piercing washes their hands and wears disposable gloves. You should be able to choose appropriate child-safe earrings and approve the placement of the earrings, and of course, receive thorough after-care advice.</p>
<h2><strong>Should I choose to get my child’s ear piercing with a gun or needle?</strong></h2>
<p>Each ear-piercing studio will have a preferred way of piercing. If the practitioner is trained and the equipment is sterile, piercing with a gun or needle are both very effective. <br>When using a needle, a single use sterile needle is pushed through the ear lobe and then the earring is placed in the hole. <br>The gun method of piercing works by pushing a stud earring with a pointed end into the ear lobe. Some people feel that the gun method is faster and therefore less traumatic for kids, however with an experienced piercing professional, a needle piercing is usually just as quick.</p>
<h2><strong>How to choose your child’s first pair of earrings</strong></h2>
<p>This is the fun bit! Most ear-piercing studios and jewellery stores will have several recommended earrings for your child to choose from for their first pair of earrings. Of course, it’s important that your child gets to choose a pair that they like, but there are a few other things to consider. <br>The first consideration is to choose a metal that won’t irritate your child’s ears. As many people are sensitive to nickel or alloys, it’s best to choose a hypo-allergenic metal like gold, stainless steel, sterling silver or titanium. <br>Because your child will be wearing these earrings for at least six weeks without removing them, it's also important to choose earrings that are easy to wear. Therefore, try to avoid anything too large or dangling. Small studs are recommended as they’re less likely to get caught in clothes and are more comfortable to sleep with. <h2><strong>How to care for your child’s pierced ears</strong></h2>
<p>The first six to eight weeks after piercing is key to healing. During these first weeks, it’s advised to avoid touching the pierced area and follow the cleaning instructions given to you by your piercing professional. Usually, that means spraying the front and back of the piercing with a mild antiseptic spray twice a day. <br>It's also important to keep your child’s sheets and pillows clean. Keeping everything clean will help avoid your child getting an infected ear piercing. Encouraging them to sleep on their back is ideal, but they can also use a U-shaped travel neck pillow to help keep the pressure off their ears while they sleep on their sides. <br>It’s worth noting that this advice is valid for children’s ear lobes. Piercing a different area, especially if the piercing is through cartilage, will have a longer recovery time.</p>
<h2><strong>What not to do after your child’s ear piercing</strong></h2>
<p>As well as avoiding touching the piercing, speak to your child about being careful when getting dressed and drying their hair with towels. That bumping or accidentally pulling the earring might lead to “piercing bumps” which, if not looked after, can lead to long-term scarring. <br>Your child should avoid swimming for the first couple of weeks after the piercing. If they can’t avoid the pool or beach, then try to cover the piercing with a waterproof band-aid and spray with the cleaning/ antiseptic solution afterwards. <br>Even if your child is tempted to change earrings, it’s recommended that you leave the original earrings in place for at least 2 months until the piercing is fully healed. After that, it’s ok to remove the earrings for a short time to change them over, but just make sure you try to insert the new earrings as quickly as possible as otherwise the piercing may begin to shrink. <br>It’s best to use the cleaning spray that’s been recommended by your piercing professional. Don’t use other strong disinfectants like Dettol or Betadine, or even natural products like tea-tree. These are likely to irritate the piercing and slow down healing. <br>If you’ve removed your child’s earring for some time and are finding it difficult to get the earring back into the pierced hole, please don’t force the earring. Instead, take your child (and the earrings and cleaning spray) back into the salon for their assistance.</p>
<h2><strong>What to do if your child has a problem with their new ear piercing</strong></h2>
<p>It’s quite normal for there to a little bit of oozing in the first few days after the piercing. Don’t be tempted to rub it away. It will usually wash away while they’re in the shower or when the cleaning spray is used regularly. If it starts to ooze a thick yellow/green colour, then it may be infected, and you’ll need to take your child to a doctor. <br>Likewise, a small amount of swelling is also normal. If it looks like it’s getting very red or so swollen that the earring is sinking/disappearing into the skin, then please take your child to see your doctor as soon as possible. <br>There should not be any significant pain in your child’s ears for more than an hour or two after the piercing, though it’s common for them to feel sensitive to touch for a few days. If your child complains that their ears very sore, it’s best to see your doctor to make sure everything’s ok.</p>

<p>Lockdowns. Terrible bosses. And empty milk cartons in the fridge. There’s already plenty of stuff in our lives that’s really, really, annoying. But our top pet peeve at Hoskings is when we go to pop on our favourite piece of silver jewellery, only to find it’s looking really sad and tarnished. And we ought to know better! To avoid you experiencing this same crisis, we’ve put together some tips on how to clean silver jewellery, so that your special pieces are always ready to wear!<br><strong></strong></p>
<h2><strong>Does all silver jewellery tarnish in the same way?</strong></h2>
<p>Before we explain why silver tarnishes, it’s worth mentioning that when we’re talking about silver jewellery, we’re usually talking about sterling silver. Sterling silver is the numero uno choice for jewellery because it’s the perfect blend of metals (or “alloy”) to give us that glorious shine while making it durable enough for every-day wear. The blend usually includes copper or another metal like nickel or zinc. Without this blend of metals, pure silver is quite soft and prone to scratching or even bending out of shape.<br>Unfortunately, even though the other metals provide strength, they’re the main culprits when it comes to tarnishing! It’s also worth pointing out that if you have a piece of jewellery that says it’s ‘silver plated’, that means that the jewellery is made from another metal like nickel or copper and is then covered or “plated” in silver. So, it’s good to remember that silver plated pieces need an even more gentle cleaning approach.</p>

<p>Sterling silver tends to dull, or tarnish, when it’s exposed to moisture. <p>These little ultrasonic gadgets have become more popular in recent years. But we have to whisper a word of caution. We’d much prefer that you don’t use ultrasonic jewellery cleaners for any jewellery with precious or semi-precious stones. Ultrasonic cleaners send vibrations through the water to clean silver jewellery, which can loosen the stone settings. And loose settings mean you might end up losing the gemstone.<br>Plus, some gemstones are a little more porous and can be damaged by ultrasonic cleaning, so you must avoid them if your silver jewellery contains turquoise, opal or pearls.</p>

<strong>Why does gold tarnish and look dull?</strong> </h2>
<p>The reason gold has been admired for so long is partly because it’s such an easy metal to maintain. In its natural state, gold stays shiny and bright. We call this ‘pure gold’ or ‘24 carat gold’. Although pure gold doesn’t tarnish, it’s quite soft, which means it’s not great for everyday use as it can scratch or bend out of shape very easily. To make gold more durable, so that it can be worn as jewellery every day, the pure gold is mixed (or “alloyed”) with other metals like silver, copper, platinum, or zinc. And it’s these metals that can cause gold to tarnish.</p>
<p>Tarnishing becomes more of an issue if the gold jewellery is worn in a humid environment or exposed to certain chemicals especially chlorine. Obviously, a harsh cleaning agent like bleach is never going to be good for your precious jewellery, but some of the biggest culprits are chemicals you might not even have thought of. For example, perfume, hairspray and some body lotions and fake tans are all bad news when it comes to keeping your gold jewellery clean and shiny. </p>

<p>The easiest way to clean and maintain gold jewellery is to wash it with warm water using a gentle liquid soap. A gentle hand soap or dishwashing liquid is perfect for the job. We suggest filling a small bowl with warm water and add just a few drops of the liquid soap. Then add your jewellery to the bowl and let it soak for about 15 minutes. If there are ornate details in your gold jewellery, you can use a soft bristled toothbrush to gently ‘scrub’ the crevices and shift any stubborn dirt. Be careful not to scrub too hard or use any abrasive products, as they might scratch your precious gold.</p>

<h1><strong>The Hoskings story</strong></h1>
<p>Did you know that Hoskings Jewellers is celebrating our 76<sup>th</sup> birthday in 2021? And to mark this wonderful milestone we thought we’d share a little more of the Hoskings story with you. A perfect story of love, romance and jewellery! We’ll tell you how we came to be, the people that make Hoskings so special. Yes, that includes you too! And the importance of the family culture we’ve nurtured for 76 years.</p>
<h2><strong>The beginning</strong></h2>
<p>In 1945, an ambitious 24-year-old gentleman named Perc G. Hosking returned from fighting for his king and country in the 2nd World War to his hometown in Frankston. At that time Frankston was a small town, 50ks south-east of Melbourne city with a population of around 10,000 people. An instrument maker by trade, he set out to establish a watch repair business below his residence in Young Street.</p>
<p>He very quickly gained a reputation for his expertise and unfailing devotion to excellence. He was an astute businessman that went above and beyond for his customers and worked tirelessly to make sure the people of Frankston received the best possible service. It was likely because of that same work ethic and sense of duty that resulted in him being elected to the position of the first Mayor of Frankston.</p>
<p>And we’re glad that 76 years later, Hoskings Jewellers remains one of Frankston’s greatest success stories and continues that same commitment to quality for our customers.</p>

<h2><strong>A family business</strong></h2>
<p>Although Perc passed away at the age of 74, in 1995, Hoskings is still very much a family-run business. Perc’s son Graham followed in his fathers’ footsteps to complete a watchmaking apprenticeship and became actively involved in the management of the business in the 1970’s. Or, “<em>the good old days</em>” as he refers to them! We think he’s a little biased because it was then that he met his future wife, Kerry.</p>
<p>Their love story actually began in the Hoskings store in Frankston after Kerry had applied for a sales assistant role. She recalls being interviewed by Perc, who at the time was lying on the floor as he often suffered severe pain resulting from a wartime injury. Undeterred by the peculiar, and a little bit brusque interview, Kerry was delighted to accept the role!</p>
<p>Kerry’s first week at Hoskings coincided with Graham’s return from an overseas trip, so he kindly offered to show her the ropes. After explaining how to work the till and write receipts, Graham asked Kerry to place some Swiss Army knives in the shop window. They’d been opened out for display purposes and placed on a block of polystyrene foam. Kerry recalls, with a laugh thankfully, that the knives were heavier than she’d anticipated and once she picked them up, they immediately fell and cut her on the way down! Graham was mortified and did his best to help patch her up. Though it seems it was a perfect excuse to make it up to her by taking her out for dinner later! And so their love story had begun.</p>
<p>Despite that baptism of fire, Kerry and Graham went on to grow the business all the way from Frankston to the Northern Territory, establishing the first Hoskings Jewellers in Smith Street Mall, Darwin in October 1987. They are lucky to enjoy a long and happy marriage and are still involved in the family business, although their kids and their partners are now responsible for the day-to-day running.</p>

<h2><strong>The Hoskings story continues with 3 generations</strong></h2>
<p>In the 1990’s, a young man called Anthony Nash joined Hoskings and became Graham’s right-hand man for the next 30 years. Staying true to Hosking’s romantic origins, Anthony met and fell in love with Ginevra Hosking (Kerry &amp; Graham’s daughter) at ‘the most romantic jewellers’ in Frankston. They married in 2001 and their 3 kids are enthusiastic jewellers-in-training! In his tenure, Anthony has contributed to the continued growth of <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/pages/store-locator">Hoskings Jewellers nationally</a> and is now the General Manager of the Melbourne stores.</p>
<p>Graham’s eldest son Clinton Hosking is an award-winning jeweller, diamond specialist and gemmologist with over 30 years’ experience. He and his wife Hayley and their 3 beautiful children moved to Darwin in 2010 to manage the NT stores and have been warmly welcomed into the Darwin community.</p>

<p><strong><em>Frankston City’s First Mayor </em></strong></p>
<p><em>Having lived in Frankston for the past 38 years and having witnessed the spectacular growth that has taken place during this period, it gives me great personal satisfaction and pleasure to be associated with the elevation of the shire to city status and to become the first mayor of the city. I have but one regret, and that is that neither my mother nor my father was spared to see Frankston become a city; loving the district as they did, they would have been very proud parents and residents at this time.</em></p>
<p><em>The achievement of city status may be regarded by some as a mere change of name, while others may look upon it as a symbol of maturity and sophistication. I se it more as a starting point – an opportunity, if you like, to open doorways to greater prosperity and better living conditions.</em></p>
<p><em>Naturally, I don’t contend that the term “city” is a magical one which will transform Frankston into a Utopia overnight. However, I am confident that the new status will inspire far greater interest in community and civic matters throughout the municipality. After all, the council’s main function is to provide such services and amenities as the ratepayers as a whole demand and nothing but good can flow from any move that will help mould the council and citizens into a team, all members of which are striving to achieve common objectives.</em></p>
<p><em>While our thoughts at this time are naturally focussed on the present and the future, I think we should pause to express our sincere appreciation of what has already been done in building Frankston into the city that we know and love. Indeed, we must record our deep gratitude to those who, despite the acute shortages of finance, manpower and materials, and the many other difficulties of the day, were responsible for laying this excellent foundation.</em></p>
<p><em>In conclusion, I wish to take the opportunity at this significant point in Frankston’s history of conveying the council’s best wishes to all citizens.</em></p>

<p>We’re hoping you’re reading this because you’re one of those curious people who likes to solve problems. And you haven’t just Googled “how to untangle a necklace” because your precious necklaces are looking more tangled than the headphone cords at the bottom of your gym bag?<br> <br>Because argh! We feel your pain. Let’s face it, untangling necklaces that have somehow ended up with multiple knots or tangled together is a real test of patience. Not to mention steady hands and some spare time! And why do they always seem to get tangled when you’re in a rush to get out the door?<br> <br>But don’t worry, we have tricks of the trade that will get you out of your knotty situation and show you the best way to untangle a necklace.</p>

<h2><strong>Hacks for quickly assessing a tangled necklace</strong></h2>
<p>First things first, take a breath. We’ve got this OK? The last thing you want to do is rush the process or apply too much force as you could cause the necklace to kink, or even break. And that’s the last thing we want.<br> <br>Now, sit down in a well-lit room and place your tangled necklace or necklaces on a flat surface. Even better if it’s a light surface so that you can see the necklace really clearly. If the necklace is clasped, unclasp it so that the ends are open and then gently spread it out so you can get a good idea of what you’re dealing with. It might be that you can see the tangling and you can gently release it, but if it looks like there’s tight knots, don’t pull on them as that might make it worse.<br> <br>If we’re dealing with the worst-case scenario and the knots look like something even Houdini couldn’t get out of, then our best advice is to gently wrap up the chain and bring it into your <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/pages/store-locator">nearest Hosking’s store</a> where the experts will fix it for you!</p>
<h2><strong>How to untangle a necklace using a pin</strong></h2>
<p>If the knot is not too tight, and you can see how it can be untangled, but you can’t release the knot gently apart using your fingers, then a sewing pin or needle is the answer! Just gently insert the pin directly into the centre of the knot making sure you do not put the pin inside a link. Then slowly and gently wiggle it until the knot loosens. You can make like a surgeon and use two pins to gently unravel the chains. Just be careful not to use too much force. If it feels like the knots are still not budging, keep reading for some more suggestions.</p>
<h2><strong>Asking for a friend...how to untangle a necklace if I’ve got butterfingers?</strong></h2>
<p>If you’re anything like “my friend” and the idea of trying to untangle a necklace for 5 minutes sounds like torture, then we have another solution. This one requires far less dexterity as we’ll get something else to do all the work for you!<br> <br>This time, instead of spreading the necklace out on a flat surface, gently place it in something like a plastic takeaway container, or a small lunchbox with just enough water to covered the necklace. And now for the hands-off-hack... place the dish on top of your washing machine and turn on a spin cycle. The vibrations should start to loosen the knots within a few minutes. Then it’s just a matter of rubbing the knot gently in between your fingers to untangle it. Ta da!!!</p>
<h3><strong>The crazy things you’ll find on Google about how to untangle a necklace</strong></h3>
<p>If you’re here because you’ve done a Google search, we’re so glad you found us first! Because, like a lot of things, asking Dr Google for advice on fixing a tangled necklace can mean you’ll find all kinds of crazy ideas. <p><strong>What’s a lab-created diamond?</strong></p>
<p>A lab-created diamond is also sometimes called a lab grown diamond, a man-made diamond, a synthetic diamond, a manufactured diamond, or a cultured diamond. All of these mean the same thing - a stunning diamond that’s been grown in a laboratory. The very first lab-created diamond was created in the 1950s by scientists that worked for General Electric in the US. It took another 30 years before they started to produce them for industrial use, and it’s only in the last few years that they’ve achieved a quality of colour, cut, clarity and size to make them suitable for diamond jewellery.</p>
<p><strong>How are lab-created diamonds made?</strong></p>
<p>Let’s start with explaining how naturally occurring diamonds first came to be. Diamonds were formed billions of years ago when they were moulded under immense pressure and heat in the earth’s mantle and pushed upwards through volcanic pipes. These naturally occurring, or ‘mined’ diamonds are now mined from deep underground and are very rare. That’s why they’re considered the most precious of all gemstones.</p>
<p>Lab-created diamonds are made either of two ways, using high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) or with chemical vapor deposition (CVD). HPHT uses high pressure and temperature to build on a little sliver of diamond, or a “seed” to simulate how diamonds were formed deep underground. Except with HPHT, diamonds are now made in a machine inside a laboratory.</p>
<p>CVD creates diamonds by pushing a carbon-rich gas into a vacuum chamber and heating it to a high temperature. The gasses stick to the seed that’s been left in the chamber and the crystals build a new diamond within days and creates a fully completed diamond within weeks.<strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>What’s the difference between lab-created diamonds and mined diamonds?</strong></p>
<p>Apart from the way they were grown, lab-created diamonds are no different from mined diamonds. Once lab-created diamonds have been grown, they are physically and chemically the same as any other diamond. They are taken in their rough state from the lab and cut and polished in exactly the same way. And we really mean that. Even when our experts look at lab-created diamonds under microscopes, they are impossible to tell apart. Because of this and to allow for complete transparency, manufacturers of the larger lab-created diamonds engrave their diamonds with the manufacturer’s details, and/or the diamond’s certificate number. Which leads us to the next question...</p>
<p><strong>Can lab-created diamonds be certified?</strong></p>
<p>Absolutely! Like any diamond, larger lab-created diamonds can be issued with a certification that verifies the colour, cut, carat and clarity of the diamond. <p><strong>Why choose a lab-created diamond?</strong></p>
<p>Lab-created diamonds are just the same as naturally occurring diamonds in terms of their chemical and physical make up and appearance. So, the decision to choose a lab-created diamond often comes down to value for money. Because lab-created diamonds are made within weeks, as opposed to being created billions of years ago, they’re an affordable way of getting the diamond jewellery you want... without really annoying your bank manager!</p>
<p>Lab-created diamonds can cost between 30% to a whopping 70% less than mined diamonds.  And “fancy” or coloured lab grown diamonds are even better value again!</p>

<p><strong>Are lab-created diamonds more ecologically friendly?</strong></p>
<p>Some people say that lab-created diamonds are a more sustainable alternative to mined diamonds as they require less manpower and processes than mining. Unfortunately, mining does impact the environment. However, lab-created diamonds are not carbon neutral, as they require a huge amount of energy to produce. Although they are not the green-friendly alternative we’d all like just yet, we hope that as more sustainable energy sources become more available, they will become more ecologically friendly.</p>

<h2><strong>Can I wear religious jewellery if I’m not religious?</strong></h2>
<p>Nowadays, it seems widely acknowledged that wearing your favourite religious jewellery is acceptable whatever your ideologies and religious views.</p>
<p>There are some people who believe that religious jewellery should be only worn as a way of publicly announcing your faith. However history has taught us that much of the symbolism of religious jewellery has been adapted not from the modern faiths they now represent, but from earlier, more ancient days.</p>
<p>For example, the cross shape has been found carved in caves that date back to the Stone Age and was used throughout the Bronze Age to decorate objects such as earthenware drinking vessels.<span> </span>In Ancient Egypt, the cross appears as a symbolic sign in the hands of the goddess Sekhe and in the ancient necropolis Naqsh-e Rostam in Iran, the “Persian crosses” were carved into the cliffside more than 2,500 years ago. More recently of course, crosses have become synonymous with the Christian faith.</p>

<p>In the jewellery trade we call coloured diamonds “fancy diamonds”. That’s because these naturally occurring coloured diamonds are even more rare and precious than white diamonds. Fancy diamonds can also be created in a lab. We’ve written about lab created diamonds before <a href="https://hoskings.com.au/blogs/news/lab-created-diamonds">here</a>.<br> <br>Fancy diamonds come in a wonderful variety of colours as well as different saturation and tone of those colours. Pink diamonds obviously get their name because of their beautiful pink colouring. And pink diamonds are the second most rare of all fancy diamonds (red diamonds are the rarest)! This means of course that pink diamonds are very desirable and valuable.</p>

<p>All diamonds are natural, or they don’t get the immense honour of being called diamonds! Lab created pink diamonds are visually and chemically just the same as a mined diamond.<br> <br>There are of course other stones like pink sapphires that might look quite similar, but they won’t have the same durability or value as a diamond.</p>

<p>Pink diamonds were first discovered in South-East India, in the Kollur mine. Pink diamonds have also been found in Brazil, Russia, South Africa, Tanzania, and Canada.<br> <br>However, in Australia can boast that nearly 90% of all the world's pink diamonds came from the Argyle mine in Kimberley, Western Australia until the mine closed in 2020.</p>
<h3><strong>Are pink diamonds valuable?</strong></h3>
<p>There are several reasons pink diamonds are considered some of the most valuable of all diamonds. One is the rarity at which it occurs and in only a handful of places around the world. We’re still not sure exactly how pink diamonds get their beautiful colour, but this fortuitous creation of pink diamonds happens far less frequently than white diamonds.<br> <br>When the Argyle mine in WA closed down, the world lost its biggest producer of pink diamonds, so they became even more exceptionally valuable.<br> <br>And of course, pink diamonds are just completely, absolutely, utterly stunning! So, there’s no question that this level of desirability and rarity means pink diamonds will always be highly prized.</p>

In fact, depending on the quality, colour and size of the pink diamond, it can be valued at much more than white diamonds.<br> <br>When it comes to determining a diamond’s value, jewellers like Hoskings use a system called “grading”. Grading a fancy diamond is a little more complex than with a white diamond. Generally, the deeper the colour of the pink diamond, the more valuable it is.</p>

<h2><strong>Water resistant watches - what are they &amp; how do they work?</strong></h2>
<p>For most of us living in Australia, we’re perfectly aware that buying a water resistant watch is a good idea. On hot summer days, the last thing anyone wants to worry about is ruining their watch when they jump into the nearest pool of cold water to cool down. But do you know what water resistant actually means and how it varies from watch to watch?</p>

<h2><strong>What does water resistant mean on a watch?</strong></h2>
<p>The Oxford dictionary defines water resistant as being “<em>able to resist the penetration of water to some degree but not entirely”.</em> So, water resistant watches will repel water but they’re not necessarily completely waterproof.</p>
<h2><strong>How do we measure the water resistance of watches?</strong></h2>
<p>You’ve seen watches with “metre” measurements on them, right? Many people assume that means the watch will be safe to dive to that distance under water, but unfortunately that’s not the case!</p>
<p>We measure the water resistance of watches using a specific pressure test carried out by an expert watch repairer. This gives us a “depth rating” that’s measured in ‘metres’, ‘bar’, or ‘atmospheres’, aka “ATM”. The more the watch is proven to resist pressure, the more it’s likely to cope better under water. A high pressure resistance or depth rating means the watch can be worn deep under water and during high-impact activities like surfing. </p>
<p>The lower the metres or bar/ATM rating, the lower the watch’s resistance to water. This chart below explains the water resistance of watches according to their rating.</p>

</h2>
<p>The water resistance measurement of a watch can usually be found on the dial or on the back of the watch case. If you can’t see the water resistant rating on your watch, you can bring it into any Hoskings store and we can help you determine how water resistant it is. </p>
<p>As a general rule, if a watch says ‘water resistant’ without any other information or obvious water resistant measurements, then it’s probably only resistant to minimal water splashes. <strong>How long do watches stay water resistant?</strong> </h2>
<p>Hoskings recommends that you re-test the water resistance of your watch at least every year. If you dive regularly or it’s exposed to harsh conditions at work or in the surf, then it’s best to have it tested even more often. This will ensure that the seal that protects the inner workings is intact and won’t allow a leak that could damage the watch functionality.</p>

<strong>Can you wear </strong><strong>a water resistant watch in the shower</strong><strong>?</strong>

<p>Technically, most water resistant watches above 50 metres will survive a quick shower every now and then, but we’d really prefer if you didn’t wear your watch in the shower.</p>
<h3>There are 2 main reasons for this:</h3>
<p>1. Soap/shampoo might make YOU smell a whole lot nicer, but the chemical make-up of these products could make the rubber seals on your watch break down over time and allow water to leak into the watch.</p>
<p>2. Water resistant watches aren’t tested in high heat or variable temperatures, so you can’t be sure how well your watch will tolerate those changes of temperature. For example, hopping out of a cool pool into a hot shower could cause the metals to expand and contract and make the seal vulnerable to over-stretching. All it needs is a small gap for steam and moisture to breach the seal and compromise your watch.</p>

<h2><strong>Can you swim with a water resistant watch?</strong></h2>
<p>The answer to this question really depends on the water resistant rating of your watch.</p>

<p>If it says ‘3 bars/ATM or 30 meters’ on the watch, then swimming is very likely to damage your watch.
